I tend to equip my Heavy W...Again, a great article! I tend to equip my Heavy Weapons Squads with lascannons, for the very same reasons you've mentioned. And then I stick them in a bunker to which I add a cheap (less than 20 points!) ammo store, so they can re-roll 1s to hit by default and I won't have to rely on orders or psychic powers to give them the much needed accuracy. Strength 7 AP4 single shots for 25 points per Heavy Weapon Team is just too high. <br /><br />You're looking at 120 points for a Heavy Weapons Squad putting out three Strength 7 AP4 Ballistic Skill 3 shots per turn at aircraft (plus the usual missiles), whereas a Vendetta is a mere 50 points more for an AV12/12/10 flyer with three twin-linked lascannons and a 6 model transport capacity. <br /><br />If you have missile launchers on your Heavy Weapon Squads and no other form of anti-air then they aren't too bad, just not the best option you could take. It's a bit gamey though as without one of the two "Run" orders the unit isn't guaranteed to completely get in front. Just be aware though that the Infantry Squad can only give cover and not true ablative wounds, so things like Serpent Shields or high rate of fire weapons will still be the death of all involved.
